Plainville Community Schools held a number of activities and
programs across the school district on November 10th, to honor and recognize veterans.

Linden Street School began the day with a flag raising ceremony, which included
a moment of silence and patriotic songs. In the afternoon, the Linden community
gathered with veteran guests for a whole school assembly that featured grade level
presentations, songs, poems, readings and instrumental performances. Students at
Linden also created cards and paper flowers for veterans in attendance.
At Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School, students, faculty and staff, together with
invited veteran guests participated in a ceremony that included Girl Scouts, musical
selections, guest speaker and veteran Foster White, and a recognition program for all
veterans in attendance.

Louis Toffolon Elementary School hosted a reception for veterans and their
families, followed by a wreath laying ceremony with pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and
first grade students that included several patriotic songs. Students in second through
fifth grade then gathered in an assembly with invited veteran guests. The program
featured musical selections, poems, readings, and a slideshow honoring veterans in all
branches of the military.

The Middle School of Plainville honored veterans with a comprehensive program
for students, invited veteran guests and their families. The program included musical
selections, military spokespersons, recognition of veterans and more. Brunch was also
provided for guests, and visual displays adorned the school’s entryway. In addition, the
Middle School community recognized the 55 Grateful American Coins that staff and
students purchased to thank 55 veterans in the local community. Through this coin
drive, the Middle School also helped to donate $400 to help educate the children of
wounded warriors. Veterans Day events at the Middle School also featured a flag
ceremony, a lesson about America's White Table and a student playing Taps. Military
vehicles and equipment were on display outside of the Middle School, and members of
the Plainville Fire and Police Departments were present in support of the program.
Plainville High School hosted a breakfast for local veterans and featured a
musical performance. In addition, the high school held a door decorating contest in
honor of veterans, and complimentary photographs were taken of veterans and their
families on that day. In addition, art students created a gallery of posters honoring
veterans, and the school held a sweater and glove drive for veterans in need. All
schools featured lessons throughout the day that highlighted the significance of
Veterans Day.

“I am very proud of the work our staff and students do to make Veterans Day an
honor for all who have served. The veterans and their families who attended these
special events in our schools were visibly moved and very appreciative,” noted
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Maureen Brummett.
