EMERGENCY EPINEPHRINE USE

Public Act 14-176 requires the administration of epinephrine as emergency first aid to students experiencing allergic reactions during regular school hours, even if the student does not have parental/guardian authorization or the order of a qualified medical professional. In the absence of the school nurse, the administration of epinephrine may be done by a qualified school employee who has completed training.

Please notify the school nurse in writing annually if you do not want your child to receive epinephrine as emergency first aid. See form here.

EMERGENCY NALOXONE/NARCAN/OPIOID ANTAGONIST USE

Public Act 22-80 authorizes school nurses and qualified personnel to administer Naloxone/Narcan/opioid antagonists for the purpose of emergency first aid to students who experience an opioid-related drug overdose during regular school hours, and do not have a prior written authorization of a parent or guardian or a prior written order of a qualified medical professional for the administration of opioid antagonists. In the absence of the school nurse, the administration of epinephrine may be done by a qualified school employee who has completed training.
