Plainville Community Schools has received a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, according to Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Maureen Brummett. The $10,000 grant will fund a job coach position in a newly formed alternative high school program, to be launched at Plainville High School in 2018.

The new Plainville Alternative Learning Center is designed for students who are behind in credit achievement, may not have a clear direction for their post-secondary life, and are often disengaged from their peers. The mission of the program is to provide an alternative, individualized means of achieving a high school diploma and a workable plan for college and / or career after high school. The program will include both an academic component as well as a career planning component. Thanks to the grant from the Community Foundation of New Britain, students will work with a “job coach” who will

provide support, direction, assistance and instruction toward preparing each student for entry into or advancement within the workforce. The academic segment of the alternative learning center will offer a supportive structure for individualized, accelerated credit recovery that will result in graduation for each student. Post-graduation planning and transition will be coordinated, supported and managed by the job coach. This model will allow students to have access to a comprehensive network of academic support, employability training, and job experiences that will prepare them to graduate from high school and gain or advance career opportunities.

“The addition of the job coach to our Alternative Learning Center at Plainville High School will be an incredible asset to the program. The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has been an outstanding supporter of many of our district programs,” said Superintendent Brummett.

Dr. Brummett received the grant at a special meeting of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain held on November 29th. For more information about the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, visit www.cfgnb.org.
