Plainville Community Schools Announces Upcoming Change to Kindergarten Eligibility Requirements
Posted on 03/31/2026
Plainville Community Schools is informing families of an important upcoming change to kindergarten eligibility requirements that will take effect beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.

In alignment with recently enacted Connecticut state law, all children must be five (5) years of age on or before September 1 of the school year to enroll in kindergarten starting in the 2027–2028 school year. This change eliminates the option for early admission to kindergarten through a waiver.

For the upcoming 2026–2027 school year, Plainville Community Schools will continue to accept requests for early admission waivers until April 3, 2026. This will be the final year that early admission waivers are permitted. Beginning with the 2027–2028 school year, waivers will no longer be accepted, and all students must meet the age requirement of five years old on or before September 1, 2027 (and turn 5 on September 1 of subsequent school years) to be eligible for kindergarten enrollment.

Plainville Community Schools encourages families with younger children to plan accordingly for this transition and to reach out with any questions regarding eligibility, registration timelines, or PCS preschool options.
