Policy Gifted students are those with outstanding learning abilities or talent.

The school district shall provide educational programs for the gifted and talented that include a broad spectrum of learning experiences which increase knowledge and develop skills necessary for the student to function successfully in society while encouraging students to excel in areas of special competence and interest.

Though early identification of the gifted and talented is important, it is essential that the identification of these students be recognized as a continuing process in that special abilities and skills appear at different times in the lives of many children and new children are regularly being enrolled in the system. In Plainville, it is the goal that all students who meet criteria be given access to differentiated opportunities through the enrichment program model each year of eligibility. Eligibility for the following school year is determined in the previous spring. Parents will be notified as to their child's continued inclusion in the program. The availability of enrichment opportunities at specific schools or at the district level is influenced by budgetary considerations. It is not the intent and purpose of this policy to establish a right to enrichment programs.
