Policy Name:Admission/Placement

The schools shall be open to all children five years of age and over. The Board may vote to admit any child under five years of age. Exceptions from routine admission may be made by the elementary school principal on the basis of supporting evidence from physical and psychological examinations.

State law requires that all students have a "health assessment" at least three times in their public school experience. In compliance with this law the Plainville Board of Education requires examinations prior to initial enrollment (before Kindergarten by the student’s own physician); one in Grade 7 and one in Grade 11.

Health assessments shall include: 1) physical examination including height, weight, blood pressure and a chronic disease assessment that includes asthma, 2) tests for tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia or Cooley’s anemia and lead levels in the blood if determined necessary by the Board after consultation with the school medical advisor, 3) updating of immunizations, 4) vision, hearing, speech and gross dental screenings, and 5) health and developmental history and any other information the physician feels is necessary and appropriate.

For new admissions to Plainville schools proof should be given within fifteen (15) school days that the student has full immunization (according to the latest state standards) or that he/she is in a program toward full immunization; or that the child be exempt for reason as stated in the law.

Children who apply for initial admission to the district’s schools by transfer from nonpublic schools or from schools outside the district will be placed at the grade they would have reached elsewhere pending observation and evaluation by classroom teachers, guidance personnel, and the school principal. After such observations and evaluations have been completed, the principal will determine the final grade placement of the children.
