The Plainville Board of Education recognizes the contribution volunteers make to the education of students and operation of the School System, and the role they serve in enhancing the School System's relationship with the community it serves. The Board encourages the use of volunteers, subject to regulation and safeguards designed to protect the interests of the school community.

No person who is listed as a registered sex offender pursuant to Section 54-257 of the Connecticut General Statutes may serve. No volunteer may work with students for periods of time when no staff is present, have unsupervised access to a school's main office, or be in other vulnerable situations, unless he/she has been checked for state criminal history. National criminal history may also be investigated at the discretion of the Superintendent or his or her designee. The School System will pay the cost of any criminal investigations.

The Board does not provide insurance coverage to volunteers for death or any loss, injury, illness or damage they suffer as a result of their unpaid service to the School System. The Board complies with Section 10-235 of the Connecticut General Statutes, generally providing indemnification for financial loss and expense arising from civil litigation.

Each volunteer is required to sign an Acknowledgment Form stating they have read and understand this policy and the accompanying administrative regulation. The Superintendent, and/or his or her designee, shall implement procedures for securing and screening volunteers, and shall be responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy. The Superintendent may delegate specific responsibilities to building principals and others, as he/she deems appropriate.

Please note: Acknowledgment Form may be found as an attachment with School Volunteers Regulation No. 4001.
