The Plainville Board of Education (“the Board”), supports the district mission to provide all students with access to high quality and rigorous instruction while enrolled in the Plainville Community Schools. This high quality and rigorous instruction is designed to prepare all students for college and career readiness, while taking into account each student’s interests, aspirations and skills. During each student’s journey through each grade, efforts will be made to capitalize on their strengths and interests to provide multiple learning experiences which align with those strengths and interests.

It is our belief that all students deserve access to high quality, rigorous coursework.  To that end, it is important to eliminate any barriers within our practices that may inhibit students from reaching their full potential from limited access to high levels of instruction.  Each student, beginning in the upper elementary grades, will begin their student success planning process.  Within this process, an academic plan will be developed which will guide the student and school staff toward rigorous educational experiences that will capitalize on the interests and skills of that student.

During a student’s high school experience, grades 9-12, the rigorous educational experiences offered will be referred to as an advanced course or program.  This advanced course or program, defined as an honors class, advanced placement class, International Baccalaureate program, Cambridge International program, dual enrollment, dual credit, early college or any other advanced or accelerated course or program as defined and offered by the Board, will take into account multiple methods by which a student can become eligible for enrollment or participation. These methods may include, but are not limited to,

  1. Interest

  2. skill level

  3. attitude toward a particular content area

  4. teacher recommendations

  5. grades in similar coursework

  6. Portrait of the Graduate proficiency

  7. Other achievement and performance data

It is the Board’s intent that all students, through their individualized academic plan, will have the opportunity to extend their learning in an area of interest and/or competence that will include a rigorous educational experience that will serve to challenge that student.
