Safe School Climate

The belief within the Plainville Community Schools is that every student, staff member and community member should feel safe within each of our schools.  To help the district achieve this goal, the Board of Education has adopted policies that align with this vision and follow the most updated legislation regarding school safety.  These policies are listed below, along with resources that will help you to learn more about the processes for maintaining a safe school climate across the district.

Within our schools, we employ various proactive strategies to create safe school climates.  First and foremost, investing in building strong, trusting relationships with our students and families is key.  We encourage all parents/caregivers and students to reach out to their teachers, counselors, administrators, or other trusted adults within their respective school buildings when there is an issue or a problem.  Along with building trust, our staff are trained in how to recognize, address and remediate incidents of challenging behavior, including incidents of bullying, discrimination and harassment.  Each school provides instruction and opportunities for students to learn about positive behaviors, as well as how to respond to negative behaviors when they arise.  As a community, we are hopeful we can work together in a positive manner to create the safest environments for our students and staff.

Reporting Incidents of Challenging Behavior

A form is linked below for parents/caregivers, students, and staff members to complete for incidents of challenging behaviors that they would like investigated.  Before and/or in conjunction with completing this form, it is important that conversations have been initiated with the appropriate staff member, beginning with the classroom teacher.  When these conversations have not resulted in the desired outcome, the issue can be brought to the attention of the school administration.  Each school principal is the Safe School Climate Specialist for their building.  If, after working together with the building principal, questions, issues and or concerns remain, you can contact the Safe School Climate Coordinator, which is the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.  The list of the individuals assuming these support roles are noted below.

Challenging Behavior Reporting Forms

Each school is required to maintain a Safe School Climate Committee, with representation from school staff, along with parents/caregivers and students.  This committee develops and monitors a Safe School Climate Plan, with goals for improvement based on school data and survey information.  These Climate Plans are to be developed by December of each school year, and are posted below for your reference.
