Wellness

The Plainville Community Schools believe good nutrition, health education, and regular physical activity contribute to a safe and healthy learning environment. It is the responsibility of the school community to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthful choices to optimize each individual's potential for success in school and in life.

Nutrition

School menus shall be planned to meet or exceed state and/or national nutritional standards. Nutritious and appealing foods, such as fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, whole grains, and 100% natural fruit juices and water shall be available wherever and whenever food is sold in the schools. Healthy foods and beverages shall be encouraged at school-sponsored activities, such as fundraisers, parties and sports events.

Health Education

In accordance with the Connecticut Framework for Health Education, all students shall participate in a sequential program of instruction imparting the essential knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy choices and avoid behaviors that can negatively impact their health and well-being.

Physical Activity

In accordance with the Connecticut Framework for Physical Education, all students will engage in a quality physical education program culminating in the creation of their own individualized life-long fitness plan. In addition the district will promote daily physical activity for each individual through daily-supervised recess at the elementary level, co-curricular activities, and community recreational activities.

The Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, in conjunction with a School Nutrition and Physical Activity committee shall develop guidelines and monitor the implementation of the school wellness plan. The School Nutrition and Physical Activity committee shall include administrators, teachers (including health and physical education teachers), school food service director, and students. Parents, students, representatives of the school food program, the Board of Education, administrators, and the public will be invited to be involved in the development of the wellness plan.
