Section:1000 Community Relations
Policy Name:Smoking in School Facilities
Policy Number:1331
Date Approved:10/10/1989
Last Revised:1/13/2003

The Plainville Board of Education is committed to establish and maintain a healthy environment conducive to learning. Medical research shows that smoking poses a significant risk to the health of the smoker and the nonsmoker. For these reasons the board is committed to improving the health and well being of each student.
It is the policy of the Board that there will be no smoking or other use of tobacco products on school property.

The board has a long-standing practice of implementing and supporting a curriculum which instructs students on the harmful effects of the use of all forms of tobacco. Consistent with this practice the Board will offer assistance to students who are tobacco addicted. This assistance will take the form of smoking cessation clinics. In addition, the Board will provide smoking cessation clinics for interested staff.

The principal of each school in Plainville is responsible for establishing and implementing appropriate administrative procedures for monitoring and enforcing this policy. Signs will be posted in appropriate areas.
