Faculty Changes at MSP
January, 2010

I would like to inform you of some recent and future changes in faculty at the Middle School.

Mrs. DeRosa has just retired as grade 7 school counselor. Mrs. DeRosa asked that I inform the public that she had to retire mid-year due to an exacerbation of a chronic pain condition. She asked that I let people know that she thoroughly enjoyed serving and working with the students, parents, and educators of the Plainville Community for the past 35 years. MSP school counselor, Mrs. Grodzicki, who has just return from a leave of absence, will take over Mrs. DeRosa's caseload from now on.

Dr. Kenney, 8th grade math teacher and math instructional leader, will be leaving MSP on January 26. Dr. Kenney has accepted an administrative position in another school district. Mrs. Butler, numeracy instructor and math teacher at MSP, will take over Dr. Kenney's math classes until a replacement teacher is hired. Mrs. Butler will continue to oversee the RtI numeracy program.

Mr. Freimuth, 6th grade language arts teacher, will be retiring in February after more than 30 years as a Plainville teacher. Mr. Jeffrey Dickau will take over as a long-term substitute for Mr. Frieimuth for the remainder of the year. Mr. Dickau has a master's degree in English and comes very highly recommended.

We wish all three of these marvelous teachers the very best in their new endeavors. They have given much to the Plainville Community Schools and they will be greatly missed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call Mr. Guarino at 860-793-3250.

Middle School of Plainville LEGO League Teams Excel
December, 2009

Since its inception, eleven years ago, the Middle School of Plainville (MSP) has had teams involved in LEGO League. They have had a history of success, and this year is proving to be one of the most successful to date. This the first year three teams from MSP traveled to the State Championships held December 13th in the Kaiser Gymnasium on the campus of CCSU in New Britain.

The MSP teams competed in two regional tournaments to win awards and earn their right to advance to the state level. At the Ragged Mountain tournament which was held at McGee Middle School in Berlin, Connecticut on November 21, Team Gear Heads won the “People’s Choice” award. This is awarded to the team that demonstrates the understanding and good practices of the wonders of science, technology, and engineering, while also demonstrating teamwork, spirit, and the thrill of competition. The members of MSP Team RoboMatics won the "Teamwork" award. This award presented to the team that best demonstrates extraordinary enthusiasm, an exceptional partnership, and the practice of LEGO League values.

At the LEGO Systems regional tournament held December 5th at the Enfield LEGO facility, Team Greenstorm won the “Gracious Professionalism” award. Gracious professionals learn and compete intensely, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process.

While all three teams performed admirably, the experienced team led by Dyllan Martin and Jacob Masco really excelled at the December 13 State Championships in New Britain. Team Gearheads won FIRST place for Innovative Robot Design and a $200.00 check given out by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). “The students have done an incredible job and I am so proud of every one of them” said Camille Westfall, Technology Education teacher and LEGO League Team Coach at MSP.
