Our Schools: Linden "Key" to Long-Range Plan

Why Linden Now?

  • The original portion of Linden was built in 1929.
  • Issues of code compliance, handicap accessibility, increased energy costs, security and the need for additional space make it necessary to address these problems with renovations and a new addition.
  • Enrollment increases are projected in our school population with 300 new homes expected over the next 7-10 years.
  • A Long-Range Plan has been developed that relies on Linden as the "Key" for all our schools.

Toffolon School

Built in the 1960's, Toffolon is at capacity with 410 students, the current enrollment has some instructional activities taking place in the corridors and storage spaces. The building is generally in good condition and is structurally sound, but it is aging and in need of code compliance. It also needs handicap accessibility and energy efficiency upgrades. Two new classrooms are needed now just to maintain the present population. Most of the new housing proposed is being built in the Toffolon district. The proposed Linden School plan would provide space for programs currently housed at Toffolon, thereby freeing up 3 classrooms

Middle School of Plainville

The Middle School also plays an important role in the Long-Range Plan. Built in 1992 for an enrollment capacity of 670 students, it already has 660 students. Renovating existing storage space will allow for 4 additional classrooms to be built. Initially these can be used to house some Toffolon students as additions and renovations are made to Toffolon. The expansion will increase the capacity of the Middle School to 760 students and should meet enrollment needs for the future.

Plainville High School

Built in the mid 1950's, and expanded in the early 1970's, PHS has many code and accessibility issues. A need to modernize and add air control for computers and moisture problems is critical. Relocating Board of Education offices, the Pre-K Program and possibly adult education to the original Linden building can reclaim an additional 12 to 16 classrooms. This will meet future enrollment increase at the High School

Wheeler School

Wheeler School having been recently expanded and renovated should have adequate space for many years to come. Should additional space be required, the current design allows for such additions.
