Community Forum
Tuesday, January 24, 2006
The Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development sponsored a Community Forum at the Middle School of Plainville Tuesday night, January 24th. Approximately 55 adults came together to learn and talk about how to help our youth avoid risky behaviors such as drugs, drinking and gambling. Information was shared by Scott Guay, a Wheeler Clinic a specialist in the areas of drug, alcohol and compulsive gambling. Parents then broke up into small groups to talk about how they would address various scenarios that they and their children could encounter. Facilitators from community organizations in town led the participants through a series of thought provoking questions.
While the adults wrestled with these weighty issues, their children were thoroughly entertained. The radio station HOT 93.7 sent two of their Street Team DJ’s, Lovey and Roberto to talk and play music. The students were delighted each time they heard the station announce the events happening at the Middle School of Plainville. Dr. Bugman also engaged the youth. This exotic animal enthusiast brought an assortment of bugs, snakes, lizards and spiders that crawled and slithered into the arms of willing participants. Students learned about each animal, dispelled myths and enjoyed the great assortment of critters that appeared from Dr. Bugman’s many containers.
| Parents found the Community Forum to be informative and encouraged future meetings to include topics such as: |
- Drugs: Participants want more information about drugs used today including date rape drugs and ecstasy.
- Invincible behaviors: What kids do without thinking and Why.
- Abusive Relationships: What are the warning signs?
|
Suggestions will be discussed at the next meeting of the Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development on Feb. 6 at 5:00 at the Plainville Board of Education, Room 118.
