District Food Services Department Expands Free Meal Offerings For All Students
Posted on 11/13/2020
The Plainville Community Schools Food Services Department continues to expand meal offerings to students and families, according to Food Services Director, Ashley Onion.
Per the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) free breakfast and lunch is available for all Plainville students age 18 and younger through June, 2021. Through the program, Plainville students, both those attending school on site and those participating in remote learning, receive one breakfast and one lunch per student per school day.  On in school learning days, meals are available at each school for students. On remote learning days, all meals can be picked up daily between 9:15 AM – 9:45 AM at Plainville High School. The meals are distributed at the high school entrance near the flag pole. Only students, parents or guardians are allowed to pick up the breakfast and lunch meals.
Additionally, the Food Services Department will now begin expanding free breakfast and lunches to include weekends. Each Friday, beginning November 13th, families can pick up weekend meals outside of Plainville High School (at the flag pole entrance area) between 9:15AM-10:00AM. Weekend meals include two breakfasts and two lunches, and all children under the age of 18 qualify for the free weekend meals at no charge. The meals will be frozen items which families can cook at home at their convenience.
With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the Food Services Department will also be offering free meals to children under age 18 for the holiday break (November 26-29). Pickup will be Tuesday, November 24th from 4:00PM – 5:00PM, outside of Plainville High School. Families can pick up four breakfasts and four lunches for their children at that time. Families who are interested in the holiday break meal program can sign up via information flyers distributed from each school.
“Plainville Food Services encourages ALL families to participate in these free meal options. Having families participate in these programs ensures students receive well balanced and nutritious meals during the week,  throughout the weekend and over the holiday break, helps the Food Services Department stay financially afloat and decreases families prep time and food budgets,” explained Onion.
“Don't lose out!  Many Plainville students are already having free, great tasting, nutritious breakfasts and lunches each day.  If your student is not, please give it a try, at least for a few days. Your participation will also help our program maintain its funding,” said Director Of Finance and Operations, Sam Adlerstein.
“We are very fortunate to have strong leadership and a dedicated Food Services Department team who ensure that our students receive nutritious, great tasting meals. This expansion of service to weekends and holiday break will provide a valuable and important opportunity to families,” noted Superintendent of Schools, Steven LePage.
