Policy

1. Student should be released from school only to their parents or to persons authorized by their parents. The school principal or designee should check carefully to make certain that the person claiming to represent the parent is so authorized. This check may be made by telephoning the parent for confirmation, or by having the student identify the caller if the parent is not available.

2. In cases of family dissention (divorced, stepparents, grandparents of separated parents, etc.) a request often comes to prohibit one party from taking the students from school. Such requests should be honored only if legal status is established.

3. Students should be released for days of religious observance upon request of their parents. A note signed by the parent must be brought prior to the day of observance.

4. Signed permission should be secured from parents permitting travel of students during school hours or under school supervision for special school activities.

5. Requests for release time for dental and medical appointments should be honored when it is apparent that such requests are in the best interest of the student. There should be mutual understanding on this point as to the effect of unnecessary interruptions of the school program among parents, physicians, dentists, and school administrators.

6. Students should be released to law enforcement officials only if a warrant is issued, or if the arresting officer has been seen the student commit a specific offense, or is acting on acceptable information as provided in statute.

7. All accidents will be reported to the student's parent/guardian as soon as possible. If on-site treatment is not sufficient, 911 will be called for help. A building administrator or school staff will accompany the student if the parent is not available.
