Mr. Petit would like the committee to decide what direction it should go in. He then turned the meeting over to Dave Jepson from JCJ. At the work session with the Town Council, a hand out was distributed listing possible cut to reduce the cost of the projects on February 22, 2005. Mr. Jepson handed out a copy for review responding to the concerns raised by the Town Council. Discussion ensued regarding the responses to the Town Councils concerns.
Bill Mead from JCJ handed out Estimate of Probable Cost Summary Sheets for the High School and Toffolon School and capacity sheets. Mr. Mead feels that grades K-5 could fit into the Linden Street School for the year eliminating the cost of renovating the Middle School. However, Mr. Mead explained to the committee that the Special Education needs have grown considerably at the Middle School since it was built. The project will need to be completed at some point in the future. Although special education has taken up much of this space, Mr. Petit feels that the committee can’t justify expansion of the Middle School at this time with the available enrollment projections. Discussion ensued.
Lynn Logoyke spoke regarding the Pre-K program in Plainville. Jack Mastrianni is concerned that the Town Council is not aware that the state and federal governments mandate the school system to provide Pre-K to special needs students age 3-5, this is matched with a regular education Pre-K student. The Universal Pre School program is something we need to plan for in the future. Kathy Binkowski will put together rationale and send this information to the Town Council.
The committee has decided to go to the Town Council with renovation status for Toffolon School and the High School.
The Plainville Community Schools’ Steering Committee and the Town Council will have another work session on March 21, 2005.
Steve Busel had invited anyone that is interested to call for a walk through of the High School.
