On Wednesday, March 25th, Plainville Board of Education members Andrea Saunders, Laurie Peterson, and Becky Tyrrell, together with Plainville High School students Jacob Masco and Sydney McGough, and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeffrey Kitching, attended the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education's (CABE) annual "Day on the Hill" event in which they, along with principals, superintendents, school board members, parents and other students from across the state, convened to voice their opinions and meet with legislators regarding education in Connecticut.
The event began with a briefing of issues at The Bushnell's Autorino Great Hall, including the governor's proposed budget and its effect on local schools districts, with CABE and the legislative leadership. Remarks were made by Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman, Senator Beth Bye, Senator Toni Boucher, Senator Gayle Slossberg, and Representative Andy Fleischmann. Senator Bye also received the Distinguished Legislator Award. Students, principals, superintendents, school board members, parents, and other attendees then "marched to the Hill" to visit one-on-one with their legislators at the State Legislative Office Building.
"In addition to being a valuable resource for our Board of Education, CABE also helps us lobby for important educational issues at the State Capitol. The Day on the Hill is a great opportunity for Board members and interested students to educate themselves on the issues facing public education," said Kitching.
