Plainville High School Student Pursues Racing Dream

For Plainville High School senior Peter Portante, the dream of racing cars began at the age of seven, when he built a go-kart for fun with his dad. Portante's dream has since come to fruition with his most recent accomplishment, winning the 2012 Skip Barber Race Series Champion Shootout - - taking first place in the three day Skip Barber Race Series Championship Shootout in Atlanta, Georgia, along with a $200,000 scholarship for racing during the 2013 season.

Portante's winning racing run began at age seven, when he was successful in the "Wild Thing" regional go-kart competitions in Connecticut and Massachusetts. From there, he consistently moved up the racing ranks, and at age 13, moved from racing go-karts to cars, consistently winning car races along the way. "I have been very fortunate over the years with my racing track record, which encompasses much more than driving talent," explained Portante. "Being successful in racing takes talent, physical stamina, the ability to strategize, and a good business sense, including marketing yourself and soliciting sponsors, as the racing profession is an extremely expensive one." Portante spends 100% of his time outside of Plainville High School working on sponsorships and donations for racing. Local sponsors include Intercity Lines Trucking and Pagliacci's Restaurant, for which Portante says he is extremely grateful.

Winning first place in the Skip Barber Series was a monumental achievement for Portante. Top drivers came together in the summer of 2012 in Atlanta for the competition which included racing, interviews, marketing and fitness, with points assigned to each component of the event. The $200,000 scholarship covered racing expenses for the next racing season in the summer of 2013, and Portante is back to work seeking sponsorships to help defray costs of the upcoming 2014 season.

Upon graduation from Plainville High School in June, Portante plans to take courses at a community college and continue to pursue racing with the ultimate goal of participating in the open car racing Indy Car Series, the top racing venue in the United States.
