Middle School Group Attends Inter-District Choral Experience Festival

On April 26, the Middle School of Plainville's auditioned choir "The Downbeats" attended the Inter-district Choral Experience (ICE) Annual Festival held at McGee Middle School in Berlin, Connecticut. As part of the festival, the students attended a workshop with Yale's a capella ensemble "The Allycats." In addition to this workshop, students worked with the auditioned ensembles from Chippens Middle School in Bristol and McGee Middle School in Berlin.

"The ICE festival is a great opportunity for our students to learn from and listen to a college a capella choir. It also gives them an opportunity to listen to and sing with groups from other schools," said Middle School Choir Director, Todd Helming. "Our students learn a lot about music and performance from this experience and also are able to learn from other students their age from other towns. This is an experience that they remember for many years!"

The afternoon ended with a public concert where each chorus performed solo selections and then the ensembles were combined for three final pieces. After the students performed, the Yale Allycats closed the day with a performance showcasing their variety of musical numbers and talents.

Members of The Downbeats reflected on their experience at the festival noting many positive outcomes. "We learned there is more to music than just notes. It's about artistry and appreciating the music that we sing," said Tyrah Green.

"This was the best music event I've ever done. I don't think I'll ever forget it," noted Jason Franceschini.

"I really enjoyed the ICE Festival because it was very fun and the workshop with the Allycats was amazing," added Elizabeth Dinielli.

"It is a great experience for our students to be involved in this inter-district event that expands their opportunity to grow as performers. Todd Helming has done a wonderful job providing these experiences for our students," said Middle School of Plainville Principal, Matthew Guarino.
