Memorial Wall Of Honor Induction Ceremony To Be Held
The Plainville Board of Education and the Plainville Community Schools' Naming Committee will hold an induction ceremony on April 9, 2012 at Plainville High School for the Memorial Wall of Honor, according to Superintendent of Schools, Jeffrey Kitching.
The ceremony, honoring inductee in memoriam Sophia Namaan Browne, will be held at the Memorial Wall of Honor in the east corridor outside of the Plainville High School pool. The ceremony will take place at 6:00PM, with a reception following immediately after in the Plainville High School cafeteria.
Mrs. Browne served diligently as a member of the Plainville Board of Education for 16 years, from 1961-1977, serving as Board Chair from 1967-1968; she became the first female African American elected chairperson of a Board of Education in Connecticut. In addition, she was a member of the Republican Town Committee, Order of the Eastern Star, the Plainville Human Relations Council, and the Women's Club of Plainville. She was president of the Hartford County YWCA and a co-founder of Tunxis Community College.
The Memorial Wall of Honor is a permanent tribute to recognize local individuals for their service to the educational community. Last year, Mr. Thomas Wazorko and Mr. Thomas Ferguson were honored as the inaugural inductees. The memorial was established by the Plainville Community Schools' Naming Committee, which includes Chairperson Lorri Goldsmith, Stacey Norton, Steve Martino, Lynn Davis, Kathy Pugliese, Scott Saunders, Becky Tyrrell, and Ex-Officio members Andrea Saunders, Jeffrey Kitching, and Steven LePage.
The Memorial Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony event is open to the public.
