Plainville Board Of Education Commences Superintendent Search

Board of Education Chair Becky Tyrrell announced Monday that the Board has officially commenced its search for a new Superintendent of Schools to replace current Superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, who is retiring after 10 years as Superintendent and 38 years in the Plainville School system.

"After assessing a number of options, the Board elected to follow the practice used by a majority of school boards and engage the services of a professional educational search organization," Mrs. Tyrrell said. "We looked at several search firms and unanimously settled upon Cooperative Educational Services (C.E.S.) of Trumbull. They came highly recommended, offered a package that includes comprehensive community involvement, and had the lowest fee structure of the firms that we considered."

The named C.E.S. consultants for Plainville will be Mr. Thomas Jokubaitis, as lead consultant, and Dr. James Ritchie. Mr. Jokubaitis previously served as Superintendent for Wolcott Public Schools, as well as interim Superintendent for a number of Connecticut school districts. Dr. Ritchie was the Superintendent in Plainville for 13 years until 1997 and Dean of the School of Education at the University of Bridgeport from 1998-2008.

The C.E.S. consultants will facilitate public forums and surveys to seek input from the community to develop a profile for the Superintendent candidate. They will oversee recruitment for the Superintendent's position, posting the position on line and in print, and also recruiting by word-of-mouth through networks of educators.

The Board of Education, acting as the Superintendent Search Committee, is solely responsible for the selection of the Superintendent. According to Mrs. Tyrrell, the Board will be actively involved in every step of the selection process -- making the determinations of which candidates will be interviewed, selecting finalists, and making the final choice of the Superintendent.

"The selection of the Superintendent of Schools is in some respects the most important decision that we will make as a Board. We are absolutely committed to giving it as much of our time and thought as is necessary to make the right decision," Mrs. Tyrrell concluded.
