Superintendent of Plainville Community Schools, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, has announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2011, after a 38 year career as an educator and leader in the Plainville school district.
"It has been an honor to work in Plainville in a number of capacities but especially as superintendent for the past decade. It has been a great and rewarding experience. I am so proud of our many accomplishments," said Binkowski.
Raised in Plainville, Binkowski attended local schools, and began her career in 1973 as a faculty member at Linden Street School, where she taught fifth and sixth grade. She then became principal of Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School, a position she held for three years. In addition, she held a number of administrative positions in the district before becoming superintendent, for which she has served for the past ten years.
Under Binkowski's tenure, the Plainville school district has seen much positive growth and enjoyed many accomplishments including significant gains in student achievement, the completion of three school building renovation projects, strategic plan development and the advancement of a number of successful partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
Binkowski has served as an adjunct professor at both Central Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut, and holds a number of professional affiliations including the American Association of School Administrators, the American Educational Research Association and the Association of Curriculum and Staff Development. Over the course of her career, Binkowski has earned a number of awards reflective of her expertise, passion, and dedication to the field of education. She received the UCONN NEAG Outstanding School Superintendent Award, as well as the Presidential Award from the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents. In addition, she received the Outstanding Communicator Award from the National School Public Relations Association, and was a four time recipient of the Superintendent’s Award for Leadership Excellence from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.
Dr. Binkowski has also served in a number of civic roles including membership in the Superintendent's Network with the Center for School Change, member of the Plainville Chamber of Commerce and Plainville Rotary Club, and Past President of the Plainville Exchange Club.
A special meeting of the Plainville Board of Education was held on January 24, 2011, to discuss plans for the new superintendent search. It is anticipated that a superintendent search committee will be formed shortly.
"Dr. Binkowski has lead Plainville schools with a level of dedication and professionalism that is certainly rare. During her tenure we have made great strides in student achievement, school climate and facilities. I know I speak for the entire Board when I say it is a privilege to work with her. While it is difficult to envision Plainville schools without her at the helm, we understand the time has come for Dr. Binkowski to have a much deserved rest and to pursue other interests," noted Plainville Board of Education Chair, Becky Tyrrell.
