Middle School's Military Mailroom Welcomes Special Guest
The Middle School of Plainville's Military Mailroom will welcome special guest Sergeant Jae Min Yandow, who will visit the middle school on October 18. Yandow is a United States Army combat medic and Military Mailroom pen pal. He is also the brother of Middle School of Plainville faculty member Leanne Gmeindl. Sergeant Yandow will visit the middle school to meet with Military Mailroom students and present the school with a special gift to show his appreciation for the group's support during his two recent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Middle School's Military Mailroom, now in its fifth year, supports a number of initiatives for troops overseas, including writing letters as pen pals, and collecting and sending items to troops abroad. Last year, the Military Mailroom group held Operation Love Your Nation. As part of this initiative, the student participants collected entertainment items such as DVDs, CDs, and IPods, to send to the soldiers deployed to remote bases in Afghanistan.
Part of Sergeant Yandow's presentation to the Military Mailroom students will include sharing how his education has helped him to be successful in his career. The Military Mailroom students, together with advisor Christina Corvello, are planning a special day for Sergeant Yandow. Activities include a slide show, refreshments, and a musical performance.
"I am so happy that my brother, Jae, is able to visit MSP! I am very proud of him and feel fortunate that he will be able to share with students how his education impacted his success in the military. I think that it's also important to let students know how much our soldiers appreciate the letters they receive. Coming to MSP is a way for Jae to thank the staff and students for their support, as well as stressing the importance of education," said Gmeindl.
"It has been wonderful the way the students here have developed a relationship with the soldiers abroad. They are very excited about Sergeant Yandow's upcoming visit," noted Middle School of Plainville Principal, Matthew Guarino.
