Plainville Family Resource Network Summer Programming A Success!

Knowing the advantages of high quality summer learning opportunities, the Plainville Family Resource Network (PFRN) offered local families with children aged birth through five, "play with a purpose" this summer at their Linden Street School site, according to PFRN Coordinator, Donna Cavallaro.

The theme for the summer programming was "Fun on the Farm" incorporating curriculum ideas from the Connecticut Frameworks and MegaSkills (Building Our Children's Character and Achievement for School and Life.) The summer program ran for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from July 6 through August 12. Twenty nine families participated in the summer programming. Activities included music and movement, puppet play with "farm animals" related to the stories, play with farm building play sets and creative art choices. Through music, play and stories, the children expanded their knowledge of position words, fine and large motor skills, pre-reading, math awareness, and increased enjoyment of children's literature " the perfect bridge to school success.

The Plainville Family Resource Network is a school, family, and community partnership working to help children grow and acquire literacy skills for a lifetime love of learning. The PFRN provides educational programs for children birth through elementary school age. It also provides programs for childcare providers and for parents. Programs and resources include parent and child interactive play and learn groups, "Turning Three" developmental screenings, and before and after school enrichment opportunities for students.

"We are excited to continue programming throughout the school year with many parent and child activities planned," said Cavallaro.
