Two Plainville Schools Achieve Energy Star Certification
The Louis Toffolon Elementary and Linden Street schools have qualified for Energy Star Certification under the federal government's Energy Star Program, according to district Facilities Director, Steve Busel.
According to Busel, the goal of the Energy Star Program is to get buildings to run as efficiently as possible across the nation. He began submitting a series of data to the Energy Star Program for the district's schools approximately 18 months ago. The Energy Star system, which includes an individual school profile for each building, tracks gas and fuel oil usage as well as electricity bought and produced. Once the photovoltaic systems were installed as part of the building renovation projects at Linden and Toffolon, the building data and overall scores improved. An application for the Energy Star designation was then submitted, with the data certified as accurate by a physical engineer. Busel was notified recently that both Linden and Toffolon schools met the requirements for Energy Star certification, which puts them in the top 25% of similar building types in the nation for energy efficiency. According to the Energy Star website, Plainville's two qualifying schools join only three other schools in Connecticut that have qualified for the Energy Star recognition so far this year.
"Having two schools qualify for these plaques is a testament to the ongoing effort of this district to design, build, maintain, and operate our buildings with energy efficiency being paramount. We are all very proud to have two, out of only a handful of schools in this state this current year, qualify for this recognition," said Busel.
"I am pleased with the ongoing efforts of our staff to keep us in the forefront of energy efficiency," commented Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski.
The school district will receive plaques and a certificate of recognition for participation in the Energy Star Program.
