Plainville Community Schools Announces 2009-10 Volunteer Award Winners
Plainville Community Schools' volunteers Brenda Tella and Cathy Cassineri have been selected as this year's school district volunteer award winners and were honored at the annual volunteer recognition program held at Plainville High School on May 25.
The 2009-10 Dick Ronalter Mentor of the Year Award was presented to Brenda Tella. This award is given to a volunteer mentor who has gone the extra mile in his or her role as an adult friend to a student. Brenda joined the Plainville Community Schools Volunteer Program as a mentor in 2005. Over the years Brenda has met consistently with her mentee at Wheeler School and most recently at the Middle School of Plainville. These weekly visits do not come easily to Brenda who relies on Dial-A-Ride, friends, or family for transportation. As difficult as it may be, a week doesn't go by when the pair don't see each other. Noted a middle school staff member, "Brenda always comes with a smile on her face and says it is all worth it just to come and talk with her mentee."
The 2009-10 Plainville Community Schools Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Cathy Cassineri. Cassineri has served on many parent/teacher committees since her children began school in Plainville and is currently the treasurer of the Middle School of Plainville's PTC. Cathy works diligently raising money for different events to benefit the schools and children in Plainville - - from selling food and drink items at school conferences to being involved in the "Spoil a Family" event during the holidays. One staff member shares, "Cathy gives her free time to the school community and is an inspiration to all volunteers."
"Brenda and Cathy are a true testament to the outstanding volunteers that share their time and talent with our students in Plainville each day. We are fortunate to have this vital community support," said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski.
