Superintendent Binkowski Participates in UConn Alumni Leadership Roundtable

Superintendent of Schools and UConn alumnus, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, was featured in the spring 2010 edition of UConn Magazine, as part of a roundtable discussion on educational leadership. UConn Magazine and the Neag School of Education invited five alumni and graduates of the educational leadership certificate program to discuss their roles as leaders in Connecticut school districts. The educational leadership group, comprised of superintendents from Plainville, Granby, Montville, Glastonbury, and a deputy superintendent from Hartford, addressed a variety of subjects relative to their perspectives as leaders in Connecticut public schools. Topics ranged from their most significant challenges to engaging the community, achievement gaps, and goals.

As part of the roundtable discussion, Binkowski articulated the challenge and success of increasing student achievement while facing a chronic lack of resources, as the Plainville school district continues to move forward despite financial shortfalls. When asked how the challenge of engaging the community has changed over time, Binkowski noted that communication has changed dramatically with advances in technology. Coupled with the complexity of school district operations, she indicated that ongoing information management and effective communication of district messages is key to parent and community engagement. Binkowski also touted the strategic steps that Plainville has taken toward improving student achievement, noting the cohesiveness of district faculty and staff around the shared focus on student achievement.

"As Superintendent, I am proud of our significant achievements and that Plainville is recognized for those achievements," said Binkowski.

"Dr. Binkowski's participation in the education roundtable is yet another confirmation of her leadership on educational issues around the state. She is highly regarded by her peers around Connecticut. The Plainville community is extremely fortunate to have her expertise, dedication and commitment," noted Plainville Board of Education Chair, Becky Tyrrell.
