After School Program Celebrates Successful Year

The After School Program at the Middle School of Plainville held their annual end of year Family Night Celebration on Monday, June 8th at the Middle School. Approximately 60 families of students who participated in the program throughout the school year were in attendance, and enjoyed food, games, and a variety of demonstrations.

This year's Family Night showcased the work of After School Program participants. On display were arts & crafts projects, photographs taken and edited in the Digital Photography class, items discovered in the Outdoor Adventure Club, paper-mache creations, and projects created in the Sewing and Advanced Sewing classes."It was wonderful to see all of the projects on display for families to view. It was certainly a testament to how hard our students have worked this year," said Program Coordinator, Kelli Wallace.

Families were also able to see how much students have accomplished this year by viewing some of the demonstrations by After School Program participants. The Guitar Lessons class provided guitars and sheet music that students used to perform for their families. The Fencing class set up electric fencing equipment, and students were able to fence an opponent during the celebration. A favorite game of the After School Program, Four Square, was set up outside for families to play together. In addition, students and parents alike were able to show off their musical talent with the interactive Rock Band program. The Monday Cooking class was busy in the kitchen preparing an assortment of vegetable trays, cheesy fiesta fondue, and other refreshments, including cupcakes that families decorated together.

The After School Program, beginning its sixth year in September, serves students in grades five through eight. After School Program participants receive a healthy snack, homework assistance, a fun academic lesson in the "Learning Lab," and an Enrichment opportunity of their choice. The program features five, five-week sessions per school year. This year, the After School Program offered over 40 different Enrichment choices for students, and had 137 participants over the course of the five program sessions.

The After School Program will begin once again at the Middle School of Plainville in mid-September, 2009. Questions regarding the program can be directed to Program Coordinator, Kelli Wallace at (860) 793-3250 x1608.
