Plainville Student Earns Women In Leadership Award

Plainville High School senior Brandy Guarda was recently selected as recipient of the YWCA New Britain Women In Leadership Award. Guarda was nominated for the award by Plainville High School Principal Greg Ziogas.

"Brandy is one of our best and brightest. It has been my pleasure to be the principal of a high school that has a young lady of leadership for our school community. Brandy is a great representative of what is good about today’s youth," said Ziogas.

The YWCA New Britain Women In Leadership Award is presented biannually to selected recipients who meet specific criteria including: 1. promoting the YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, 2. demonstrating outstanding achievement as a volunteer, contributing to the betterment of the workplace, neighborhood and / or community, and 3. demonstrating exceptional abilities and accomplishments as a pioneer, innovator, leader and / or role model within a corporation, educational institution, government agency, organization or community.

Guarda, who is ranked fifth in the Plainville High School Class of 2009, will be attending New York University in the fall. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Italian National Honor Society, where she serves as president. She traveled to Italy in 2008 as a member of the Scandicci-Plainville Italian Exchange Program, and is president of the French / Italian Club. She has assisted in organizing National Honor Society fundraisers to support fuel assistance for families in need. In addition, she was recipient of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and remains active in her church’s youth group, volunteering in a number of capacities.

"Brandy is an exceptional young lady who has a very promising future," noted Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski.

Guarda and fellow award winners were honored at the 13th annual Women in Leadership celebration luncheon held on May 20 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville.
