Middle School Technology Students on the Move

Ten students from the Middle School of Plainville participated in the state Technology Student Association (TSA) Competition on May 8 at the Hartford Convention Center. The students took part in a variety of activities ranging from dragster racing to bridge building and Lego robotics. Plainville students Richard Hanson and Ashley LeVassuer took First Place in the Problem Solving competition by building the tallest structure possible using a limited supply of materials. A movie about community service involvement submitted by middle school students Jacob Masco, Kasey Mahan, and Nick Zaleski placed third in the Video competition. Ryan Sifuentes, Tyler Gingras, Nick Violette, Emily Duda, and Dyllan Martin also attended the competition.

On May 13, a group of students from the middle school attended the fifth annual Girls and Technology Symposium held on the campus of St. Joseph College in West Hartford. According to Technology Education instructor Camille Westfall, this was the first time that Plainville has been invited to attend the event, which was sponsored by the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF) and St. Joseph. A group of ten seventh grade girls including Sarah Durkin, Katie Bernier, Sage Gentry, Nikky-Ann Duncan, Alicia Gorski, Julia Davidson, Almedina Keranovic, Arielle Lozefski, Meghan Liquindoli and Shayla Beausoleil, were selected from the middle school to attend the prestigious event, which involved 20 schools from the greater Hartford area. The girls worked with college students and faculty in a variety of workshops designed to foster an interest in science, math, and technology.

"One of my goals as a teacher is to engage girls in hands-on experiences that expose them to the variety of educational and vocational options involving technology. I thought that the Girls and Technology Expo was fabulous and the experience was rewarding for my students," said Westfall.

"These accomplishments are wonderful examples of the leadership shown by our students and teachers! We are fortunate to enjoy their successes," noted Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Binkowski.
