District Special Education Program Acknowledged for Meeting Annual Performance Requirements
The Plainville Community Schools Special Education Program was one of 134 programs statewide to meet the State of Connecticut's 2009 Annual Performance Requirements, according to a letter sent to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, from Commissioner of Education, Mark McQuillan.
In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) 2004, each state must have in place a performance plan that evaluates the state's efforts to implement the intent and requirements of the law. Connecticut's State Performance Plan (SPP) is a six year plan that describes the state's performance on 20 indicators relative to special education. States must also report annually to the public on the performance of each district in relation to the targets in the State Performance Plan. The data is reviewed and each district is assigned to one of four categories including: Meets Requirements, Needs Assistance, Needs Intervention, and Needs Substantial Intervention, with Plainville achieving the Meets Requirement status. Current determinations are based on districts’ 2007-08 data.
"The special education department is honored to receive this distinction for two consecutive years. This is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the Plainville special education teachers and support staff," noted Director of Special Education and Pupil Services, Maureen Schiffer.
"This represents the terrific work of all of our staff," said Superintendent Binkowski.
