A group representing the Plainville Board of Education traveled to Hartford to participate in the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education's (CABE) annual A Day on the Hill program held on March 4th. Plainville Board of Education Chair Becky Tyrrell, together with Plainville High School students, senior Alicia Panetta, and junior Kasey Olsen, attended the event organized to raise awareness of education issues in the State Legislature. "Day on the Hill is a great opportunity for Board members and students to learn about the state budget process," said Board of Education Chair Becky Tyrrell.
The program included remarks by Legislative leaders including Education Committee Chairman Andy Fleischmann, Representative from West Hartford, and Toni Boucher, Education Committee member and State Senator from the 26th district. In addition, students learned about budget shortfalls and potential mandate relief. The group marched to the Legislative Office Building and observed a student roundtable discussion.
The event provided the opportunity for students to gain first hand experience in state government as it relates to public education. "The day offered a great deal of insight into how difficult it is for the Board of Education, especially in regard to the budget. Much of the time, we don't give them the support they deserve. They are really doing their best with what they have," said Panetta. "The Day on the Hill was a great chance to listen to what major issues Boards of Education all over the state are faced with. There are many people putting a lot of time and effort into things such as the budget and various mandates that may not be recognized as much as they should be. It made me understand better how much responsibility these boards have in making their community schools great places to learn," added Olsen. -
