Middle School Students To Participate In Northern Region Festival Chorus
Seventeen students from the Middle School of Plainville (MSP) have been accepted to the Northern Region Middle School Music Festival's Honors Choir. Forty six MSP students auditioned for the choir, a program of the Connecticut Music Educator's Association (CMEA). According to their website, CMEA is the federated state organization for the National Association for Music Education, which represents the profession of music education in the United States. The regional festivals are one way that the Connecticut Music Educators Association continues to fulfill its commitment of more than a half century to music education.
The Northern Region Middle School Music Festival is open to all middle school age students in the northern region of Connecticut. Top scoring students are invited to participate in this year's Honors Choir. To prepare for the auditions, the students spent time learning advanced music skills including musical literacy (decoding and performing) and applying the knowledge in real performances in front of peers and adults. At the audition, students were required to perform a prepared piece of classical music, sight read a musical excerpt, and echo a musical passage.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Middle School of Plainville was the most represented school at the choral festival as well as one of the top two schools for the number of students accepted into the Honors Choir. In addition, the top three tenors in this year's choir are from MSP, while two of the top three basses are from the middle school. "We are fortunate to have many students who excel at music and work hard. Their success is a reflection of their hard work and the quality of the choral students at MSP," said Middle School of Plainville Music Instructor Todd Helming.
The following students were accepted into the Honors Choir: Abby Richardson - Soprano, Marissa Schilling - Alto, Peter Romano, Josh Kozee, John Crowe, Nick Zaleski, Alex Collins, Josh Buchalter, Darin Adams, Jake Dutkiewicz - Tenors, Forrest Zirpolo, Jordan Bubbico, Patryk Plona, Jordan Nicholson, Justin Freitas, Joe Esposito - Bass, and Josh Hausman - Horn and Voice.
The Honors Choir Concert will be held on March 7, 2009, at the Har-Bur Middle School in Burlington.
