Speaker Urges Plainville Students to Invest in School for Success
Nationally renowned motivational speaker Keith Hawkins recently visited Plainville High School with an important message for students: invest in your time at school for future success.
Members of the Plainville High School Student Athlete Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.) attended a statewide youth leadership conference earlier in the year that featured Hawkins as a presenter. Impressed with Hawkins, the SALT students returned to Plainville with a plan to raise money to bring him to Plainville High School to share his message with the student body and high school faculty. The SALT group regularly sponsors events designed to improve the school community and support student leadership. In addition to student planned fundraisers, the Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development sponsored a portion of the cost. "The Coalition was pleased to assist in bringing Keith Hawkins' motivational message to Plainville's youth. His inspirational words align with the Coalition's mission of promoting a community environment that empowers children to positively shape their lives," said Coalition Co-Chair Roberta Brown.
On October 14th, Hawkins addressed Plainville High School students in two assemblies and conducted a workshop for faculty and administrators. During the student meetings, Hawkins spoke about the choice students have to "spend", "invest" or "throw away" their valuable time at school, emphasizing the need for all students to be connected and have the courage to make the most of their time while in school. At the conclusion of the school assemblies, students favorably endorsed Hawkins. "Keith Hawkins really inspired me and others to take high school more seriously and not regret any moment," said Alexandra Tarca. Fellow senior Dan Hermanowski noted, "I walked in with a negative attitude and walked out with an optimistic one." Sophomore Kaitlin Lennon added, "It was good that he was capable of coming down to our level to discuss things that we could relate to." Hawkins also made a favorable impact on junior Mike Shidlovsky who said, "I will never forget him!"
Faculty and administrators echoed the positive comments about Hawkins' visit to Plainville. "Mr. Hawkins' message to all of our students was powerful and positive. I have never before witnessed more attentive audiences at a high school assembly," commented Plainville Community Schools Athletic Director and SALT Advisor John Zadnik.
"Keith is a dynamic personality who not only took the time to speak to our students in a meaningful way, but also spent the day learning about them and talking to them about the importance of their education," said Plainville High School Principal Greg Ziogas.
