Middle School of Plainville Summer Program in Full Swing

The Summer Program at the Middle School of Plainville is off to a tremendous start, with students enjoying a full schedule of fun and learning. Students entering grades 6 through 9 are enjoying a pilot summer program at the Middle School of Plainville, where they are participating in exciting academic, enrichment, and recreation opportunities. There are six one-week sessions being offered, and students may sign up for any number of sessions. To date, approximately 70 students are enrolled throughout all six sessions, with between 35 and 45 students in each session.

The program runs from 9:00AM-1:00PM, Monday through Friday. Each day, the summer program begins with a morning activity organized by staff members, including games, scavenger hunts, and skits. Students then rotate between three blocks; each student takes an academic, enrichment and recreation “class”. Academic choices include: Going Green, Business Club, Mad Scientist, Foreign Language Club, Poetry, Creative Writing, and Greek Mythology. Students are able to take mathematics and English classes for additional academic support over the summer. Students also get to choose from a variety of enrichment classes, which include: Cooking, Jewelry, Arts & Crafts, Guitar, Computer, Legos, Rock Band & Guitar Hero, Theater, Wood & Glass Decorating, and more. Finally, each student participates in a recreation segment. During recreation, students play sports, collaborate through team-building games, and enjoy outdoor activities. During recreation, students also have a healthy snack and time to relax with friends.

"The program is off to a great start. Our students are really enjoying themselves and learning so much. There is always something fun going on," explained Program Coordinator, Lindsey Matteo. "This program truly meets the needs of our families. We are proud to offer a fun, safe, and enriching environment for students to explore different topics and develop new skills."

State Representative Elizabeth (Betty) Boukus, who has been a key supporter of the after school and summer programming in Plainville commented, "The Summer Program at the Middle School of Plainville provides students with a safe, nurturing environment to learn and have fun. I am so pleased that the program is thriving."

Bus transportation is provided one-way home for Plainville residents, and a Project CHOICE bus is provided two-ways for Hartford students. Program openings are available for Session 5 (Aug 4-Aug 8), and Session 6 (Aug 11-Aug 15). Please download the enrollment packet from the Plainville Community Schools website: and return to Lindsey Matteo, Program Coordinator, at the Middle School of Plainville to enroll.
