Plainville Family Resource Network Awarded Grant to Expand Programming

The Plainville Family Resource Network (PFRN) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $8,024 from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain from their First Years First early childhood development initiative, according to PFRN Site Coordinator Donna Cavallaro. "We are very fortunate to be awarded these funds for the second year, allowing Plainville families to benefit from uninterrupted programming throughout the summer. Having the opportunity to offer a quality early childhood education model provides a perfect springboard to a successful school year experience," commented Cavallaro.

The grant will allow for the continuation of the popular and successful interactive parent and child playgroups that 117 Plainville families attended throughout the school year. This summer parents will also benefit from the Parents As Teachers program, providing personal visits to parents, information about early brain development, developmental milestones and general parenting support. Also funded through this grant will be two eight week sessions of "Conscious Discipline" parent education workshops during the upcoming school year. The "Conscious Discipline" program fosters optimum parenting skills which ultimately promotes success in school and throughout life.

"We are grateful for this grant funding that allows us to continue the quality programming provided by the Plainville Family Resource Network, and extend these critical resources to parents," said Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Binkowski.

The Plainville Family Resource Network (PFRN) is a school, family, and community partnership working to help children grow and acquire literacy skills. The purpose is to enable all Plainville children the ability to enter kindergarten prepared and ready to learn in all areas of development. The PFRN provides a broad continuum of services to foster the optimal development of children and families. These services include parent education and training; family support; programs to foster positive youth development; and family child-care provider training. During the school year, the PFRN provides daytime and evening PlayGroups for children age’s birth to five and their families, as well as before and after school enrichment activities that are curricula linked for grades 1-5.

PlayGroup is a warm and welcoming place for Plainville families to meet one another and enjoy fun activities, music and movement, and stories with their children. It also is a time for children to develop and strengthen their play and socialization skills. For more information contact the PFRN at 793-6304.
