Rotary Club of Plainville Supports District Literacy Initiatives
Plainville Community Schools will further enhance its focus on literacy through a number of initiatives made possible by the generous support of the Rotary Club of Plainville.
At the elementary school level, classroom libraries will be supplemented with the addition of a number of books connected to mathematics. The books will be utilized in the newly established Reading Buddies program and Math Clubs at each elementary grade level providing an additional format for students to make connections between literacy and mathematics, and to understand mathematic applications in the real world.
The Middle School of Plainville will soon launch a Boys' Reading Club as a result of the Rotary's support. The club will provide a structured environment for middle school male students to read after school. Participants will receive high interest reading materials based on individual areas of interest, and will be encouraged to share their thoughts and insights through facilitated group discussion. The book club framework supports the development of authentic response to literature as well as the development of higher order thinking skills through collaborative learning.
"The Rotary's support of our literacy and numeracy work is greatly appreciated. This is a wonderful example of how Rotary supports the needs of the entire community," said Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Binkowski.
