Section 10-184 of the Connecticut General Statutes describes the duties of the parents for educating their children. It requires that parents or persons having control of children five years of age and over and under eighteen years of age shall cause child "…to attend a public day school regularly…", however, Section 10-184 also allows the parent or person having control of such child to educate the child in other than the public schools if they are "…able to show that the child is elsewhere receiving equivalent instruction in the studies taught in the public schools".
State Department of Education guidelines suggest that parents of children who are schooled at home file an annual "Notice of Intent" with the local school district. The Superintendent in turn will send an acknowledgement to the parent. If you are a home schooling parent of a child between the ages of 6 and 18, please contact the office of the Director of Curriculum, Plainville Community Schools, 1 Central Square, for a copy of the "Notice of Intent" for home instruction. Those who choose not to file the Notice of Intent, should notify the Director of Curriculum in writing.
