Toffolon Renovation Project Progresses as Planned

While no visible signs of renovation are evident on Northwest Drive, the Louis Toffolon Elementary School renovation project is on target and project planning continues, according to school district and project officials.

The referendum for the Louis Toffolon Elementary School was approved in June, 2007. Since that time, project planning and preparations continue under the direction of the Capital Projects Building Committee.

The project architect, AM Design Architects, Inc., is moving forward with the development of construction documents for the Phase 3-Architectural building design. A presentation to the Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled for September 11th, and the Plainville Wetlands Commission will vote on project approval on September 12th. A Plan Completion Test meeting for this phase of the project is scheduled for October 15th. Phase 2 demolition, concrete, steel, and site information is currently being reviewed by State of Connecticut Bureau of School Facilities (BSF); once this is approved, the architect will issue drawings to be used for project bidding.

Turner Construction Company, the Toffolon project construction manager, is currently developing the scope of work for the first five packages that will go out to bid once the BSF approves Phase 2 of the project. According to Ty Tregellas, Project Executive at Turner Construction, they have elected to hold off on bidding the abatement for the project as a solitary bid package, as it is expected that they will receive more favorable pricing and better coordination of the work if project abatement and demolition are a combined bid package. "Pending approval from State Bureau of School Facilities, we expect to put the demolition, abatement, steel, concrete and the site work portions of the Toffolon renovation out to bid in October," stated Tregellas

"The Capital Projects Building Committee, along with the architect and construction manager, are working diligently to construct a cost effective bid package. The Bureau of School Facilities reviewers are impressed with their work to date," Superintendent Kathleen Binkowski stated.
