Extended School Day for Plainville Students to Begin In September
Plainville Community Schools will increase the school day by 20 minutes for all students beginning in September, 2007. According to Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Binkowski, the extension of the school day will provide for the extension of learning district-wide. "Academic learning time will increase with a focus on numeracy and literacy. There will be targeted instruction in these areas in addition to study skills at the middle school to support the transition to high school. This additional focus is great for students and we expect powerful results."The additional 20 minutes per day will be incorporated in a variety of ways to extend learning time. At the elementary school level, instruction and support for students of all learning levels and styles will be strengthened through a Reading Buddies Program and Math Clubs. The Reading Buddies Program connects students across grade levels to create positive role modeling and opportunities for students to develop and improve their confidence as readers. In addition, structured time for math differentiation will be provided through Math Clubs. As such, elementary school students will benefit from targeted math instruction opportunities. The additional time at the middle school will also focus on extended learning, allowing for increased academic periods each day. As a result, nine additional hours of instruction in Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies will occur each year at the middle school. In addition, the current Enrichment period will be modified to incorporate a Study Skills curriculum to enhance student learning. Plainville High School will utilize the additional 20 minutes per school day to implement a mentor program and to add a homeroom period. Through the Mentor Program, every high school student will be paired with an adult mentor from the high school; mentors, who will provide positive role modeling and support, will meet with students once per week at a designated time. The extended school day will also allow for a homeroom period to be created at the high school. The homeroom period will streamline communication and daily operations for students, faculty, and staff, without impacting instructional time.
The extended school day schedule will begin in September, 2007 as follows:
Linden, Toffolon and Wheeler Elementary Schools: 8:50 AM - 3:30 PM - AM Kindergarten: 8:50 AM - 11:40 AM - PM Kindergarten: 12:40 PM - 3:30 PM
