Reading Starts With Us - An Evening of Fun and Learning
Plainville Community Schools kicked off its 9th year of the Reading Starts With Us Family Literacy program, with the first session held at Linden Street School on November 8th. The goals of the Reading Starts With Us program include promoting parental involvement in their children's literacy development through the presentation, instruction and modeling of family literacy strategies and extension activities; fostering parent/teacher partnerships resulting in better home/school communications; promoting the value of reading within families as a pleasurable leisure activity; and promoting literacy-related activities at home.
The first session included dinner provided by the Plainville High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department under the direction of Kathleen Hein. After dinner, participants enjoyed learning about “fun with poetry”. Students and their parents created poetry cubes and put together their own poetry books to take home and enjoy together. The next Reading Starts With Us session will be held on January 9th at Linden Street School and will be open to Toffolon and Wheeler students who participate in the STARS (Strategies To Accelerate Reading Success), Reading Recovery or English Language Learner services.
“This experience helps students and their parents to enjoy simple and fun activities that reinforce critical literacy skills. Fostering relationships and communication between home and school leads everyone on the road to greater understanding. With this understanding, we can all come to realize how our actions can positively impact the lives of the precious children who we have the privilege of teaching and nurturing together,” noted Literacy Facilitator and English Language Learner Coordinator, Michelle Steck.
