After School Program Underway at the Middle School
The Middle School of Plainville’s After School Program is a huge success this year, with over 70 students attending the first session of the 2006-2007 school year. The program is offered to students in grades five through eight after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the middle school. Components of the program include a healthy snack, homework assistance, academic support, and enrichment classes. A variety of enrichment activities offered during the first session include Arts & Crafts, Circus Skills, Computer Wiz, Cooking Around the World, Electric Fencing, Sports Craze, and Theater. New this year is an “Extended-Day Option”, which gives parents the choice of later pick-up times for a small additional fee. The After School Program provides a safe place for kids to learn fun, exciting, enrichment activities. “We’re off to a great start this year. With over 70 students enrolled, attendance is high, and we’ve made the after school program a fun place for kids as well as staff. Also this year, we’ve added some new, fantastic staff members that really make the program great,” said Lindsey Matteo, program coordinator.
The success of the After School Program, now in its third year, is due in part to the support of state and local grants from the State Department of Education, the Department of Social Services, the United Way, Gnazzo’s, and Farmington Savings Bank. “The increase in our state funding from $50,000 to $75,000 is a great benefit to Plainville. We can now think in terms of expansion and providing more, exciting services to Plainville kids,” said Matteo.
Session 2 of the After School Program will begin on November 9 and will run until December 14th. The program will meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10 days. During Session 2, students will have the opportunity to choose Theater, Art Class, Jewelry Design, Guitar Lessons, Martial Arts, Floor Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, Circus Skills, Electric Fencing, and Computer Wiz! Tuition for the program is $75 per session for grades 6-8 and $55 for grade 5. Discounts are given to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Bus transportation is provided for grade 5 students to the middle school.
