District Prepares for Start of School on September 5th
While Plainville students enjoy the final days of summer, school district staff continue with preparations for the upcoming school year, which begins on Tuesday, September 5, 2006. “Professional development is important for administrators and staff members alike. We provide a comprehensive professional development program to ensure that district staff are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to continuously excel as educators,” noted Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, Superintendent of Schools.
Educational leaders in Plainville recently participated in a professional development training program pilot funded by the GE Foundation and modeled after GE’s own executive leadership and management training program. The primary focus of the professional development training was to enhance the leadership abilities of school district administrators, and ultimately improve the district’s capacity to educate Plainville students to high performance levels in the core areas of literacy, math and sciences. The program pilot will also be shared with Instructional Leaders from the school district who will participate in a leadership summit focusing on the topics of Change and Creating a Collaborative Culture for Instructional Improvement.
A comprehensive new teacher induction was held recently to provide an opportunity for new staff members to learn about educational practices in Plainville Community Schools. The induction program included sessions on differentiated instruction, special education, curriculum highlights, bullying prevention, technology integration, effective lessons for literacy and numeracy, and a human resources orientation. All district staff will participate in the annual Convocation event to be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, followed by a district-wide Technology Day on August 30th ; a variety of staff development sessions focusing on all aspects of technology will be provided. Professional Development sessions will also be held at the individual school buildings on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Elementary and high school sessions will feature School Learning Plans, while Positive Behavior Support will be the focus for staff at the Middle School of Plainville. Friday, September 1st is scheduled as a Teacher’s Work Day throughout the district, as staff members make final preparations for the start of school on September 5th.
