The student will know . . .
  • The first people that came to America were hunters that came over the Bering Land Bridge following their animals.
  • Europeans wanted to find sea routes to Asia so they could more easily trade with Asian countries.
  • Europeans wanted to spread Christianity.
  • Technological advances made exploration possible.
  • Explorers, such as Vasco da Cama, Christopher Columbus, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Francisco Coronado, Hernan Cortes, and Ferdinand Magellan, made important discoveries that helped further Portuguese and Spanish exploration.
  • The French, Dutch and English explored the Western Hemisphere to find the Northwest Passage to increase trade and to explore Asia.
  • European exploration and settlement had an impact on the natives through exposure to different food, animals, weaponry, religion and disease.
  • Spanish and French settlers established colonies for fur trade, religious missions, military protection, and in search of gold and silver

 Graph Club Activities
 Keynote Activities As a class use the 3 Category Keynote Jeopardy, No Multiple Choice template or the 5 Category Keynote Jeopardy, No Multiple Choice template to create an Explorer's Jeopardy game for another fifth grade class. Use information gathered in Explorer's Convention research for jeopardy questions. This is a good opportunity to introduce the use of Keynote and transitions.
